Whether you believe that theyre the most entitled generation ever to walk the Earth, or the one most let down by the generations that have preceded it, theres no disputing that theyve had it tough on the job front. Graduating into the worst economy since the Great Depression is no-ones idea of a good time, but its a story thats sometimes difficult to comprehend for those who have enjoyed being able to hunt for a job during periods of relative prosperity.A recent study from Accenture underlines just how tough the past couple of years have been for the graduating classes of 2012 and 2013 out there in the real world. For example of the 42% of grads surveyed who managed to find a job within 6 months of graduation, just 67% are working in their chosen field. And only 60% are making more than $25,000. And those are kids who graduated during a period of employme nt growth think what it must have been like for the class of 2009. 4 things every child needs before breakfast
4 things every child needs before breakfast4 things every child needs before breakfastThe way you see a child is the way you treat them and the way you treat them is who they will become. - adapted a quote from GoetheMost children wake up the same way their parents wake upeither flustered and in a rush, orwith no plan or strategy for how to succeed at the dayChildren shouldnt be expected to know how to start their day off right. They shouldnt be expected to know how confidence is built, or how momentum and motivation works. But their parents should understand these things. And their parents should help their children understand and live in ways that allow them to be confident and successful.Helping a child develop confidence and momentum daily is not rocket-science.Its actually incredibly simple. At the most basic level, heres what children need immediately upon waking-uphydration for body and brain functioningphysical affectionsmall wins for confidenceappreciation and besttigungIn ord er for a child to receive these things, they need a parent who is present and caring. They need a parent who has put first things first - and already started winning themselves. A parent who has taken care of themselves so they have the wherewithal to be truly mindful of their childs needs and emotional state. If you help yur kids get these 4 things daily, they will transform. Theyll become healthier, happier, and mora confident. Theyll become mora successful in all areas of their lives. How do I know?Because for the past 3.5 years, my wife and I fostered three incredible children who we recently adopted. When we got these kids, they were an absolute wreck Youd be too if you came from their background. We had to deal with an extreme situation, and necessity is the mother of invention. Our kids are far from perfect. We all have our crazy moments. But they have made amazing progredienz And continue to do so daily When it comes to kids especially, its far more powerful to measure the GAIN S than the GAPSMostly, my incredible wife is the reason for our kids success. Shes amazing. She deserves ALL of the credit.Heres how this Successful Child Morning Routine works. And by the way, it can all be accomplished in less than 10 minutes.1. Drink lots of waterAfter a long nights rest, your body (and childs body) is often dehydrated.Hydration first thing in the morning is essential because it increases the production of new muscle and blood cells. Additionally, a hydrated body gets and uses more oxygen, which is needed to be alert and energized. Most people feel groggy the first 35 minutes after waking up. Youll be stunned how quickly you become alert and awake if you drink a huge glass of water first thing in the morning.Your body and brain need it.Your children need lots of water first thing in the morning for their developing brains and bodies.A study done by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that over 50% of children in the United States are dehydra ted. This is an easy fix.For adults, it is smart to super-hydrate when you first wake-up by drinking over 20 oz. of water. The more the better.2. Physical touch and loving affectionWhile your child is drinking their morning water, it would be incredible if you were giving them a hug or a short back massage.Research shows that warmth and affection expressed by parents to their children results in life-long positive outcomes for those children. Benefits includehigh self-esteemimproved academic performancebetter parent-child communicationfew psychological and behavioral problemsConversely, children who do not have affectionate parents generally havelower self-esteemfeel more alienated, hostile, aggressive, and antisocialIn 2010, researchers at Duke Medical School found that babies with very affectionate and attentive mothers grow up to be happier, more resilient, and less anxious adults. In that study, most of the mothers showed normal levels of affection but only 6% shows high levels of affection.Numerous studies on the effects of massage show the positive benefits it offers to reduce anxiety in children. A short and loving massage is an incredible way for parents to connect to their children, both physically and emotionally.A study among adults showed that those who received physical affection from their parents as children had less depression and anxiety as adults.Your child needs to feel your love first thing in the morning. Words are extremely powerful. But physical touch is also very important. This doesnt need to take long. Even 30-60 seconds of loving physical tough. A short massage or back scratch and some kind words. This will work wonder for your relationships with your child - which is essential for their well-being. It will also work wonders for your child individually in all areas of their lives.3. Quick small winsTheres a growing body of research showing that confidence and positive habits are the product of small daily wins (see BJ Foggs research at Stanford for more info).Confidence is fickle. It needs to be re-established daily.Confidence is the byproduct of successful behavior. In the recent hit book, MAKE YOUR BED Little Things That Can Change Your Life And Maybe the World, author and famed Navy Seal William McRaven explains how making his bed first thing in the morning changed his life. It got him in the habit of winning. It created confidence first thing in the morning, which rippled into other wins throughout the day.Momentum and confidence are highly connected. When you wake up and get a few small wins, your confidence increases. If you wake up and dont start winning, then confidence drops. When you get even a small win, like making your bed, you feel more confident to keep winning. This leads to momentum.Your children should get a few small and easy wins right after they wake up. This will create new and daily confidence in their lives.Confidence and momentum are that simple. As is motivation. Motivation is the bypro duct of positive action. Its important to note that your confidence as a parent is also based on the fact that you yourself have been winning in the morning before you have interfaced with your child. If you havent put first things first, you wont have as much confidence when you interact with your kids. If youre not confident yourself, you shouldnt expect to raise a confident child.Regardless of what has happened in the past, confidence is something you can build daily. Just get some small wins. Whatever that means for you. Here are a few solid ways to win in the morningmake your beddrink a big glass of waterprayer and meditationread or listen to uplifting materialwrite in your journal about your day and the person you intend to bego for a walk or do a workoutmake progress on a personal goalYou dont need to do all of these. Even one or two will make a big impact on WHO YOU ARE when you interact with your children first thing in the morning.Your emotional and psychological tone comple tely influences your childrens. If youre feeling amazing because youve already been winning yourself, then youll project that energy onto your children. Youll love them more. Youll give them more attention and affection, because youll have the capacity to do so.Theyll feed off that energy and begin winning themselves. They will be more positive toward others, because youre being more positive and loving toward them.4. Appreciation and affirmationFinally, its important that your children are receiving praise and affirmation first thing in the morning. Especially in response to the wins they are getting. If your child makes their bed and drinks a glass of water first thing in the morning, it is powerful if they are acknowledged for that.Appreciate them for what theyve done. Affirm their behavior. This will positively condition them to continue doing so.Research on gratitude shows that when a person expresses gratitude, they change how they see the person. As Dr. Wayne Dyer said, When y ou change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. When you express gratitude, you love the people youre grateful for. Words are powerful things. They change emotions and feelings. As Harvard psychologist Jerome Bruner has said, Youre more likely to act yourself into feeling, than feeling yourself into action. When you express gratitude, you feel more love.Love is a byproduct of positive action. When you express and show love through physical and verbal affection, youll feel more love for them.Theyll be more confident and youll be more confident as their parent. Theyll be winning because youll be winning.ConclusionYou pile up enough tomorrows, and youll find you are left with nothing but a lot of empty yesterdays. - Meredith WillsonChildhood is short.Im stunned how fast the past 3.5 years have gone since we got our kids. When we got our kids, they were 3, 5, and 7. Now they are almost 7, 9, and 11How did that happen?Dont waste another day. Your children are worth so mu ch. If you can help your children start winning in the morning, they will get more consistent at winning throughout their life.Of course, perfection should not be the goal. We all have plenty of off days. Parenthood is nuts Compassion and love are essential for both yourself and your children when things arent going as well as they could.Keep working at it.Consistency is the goal. Daily progress is the goal.Confidence and momentum are built one day at a time. Every single day.For both your children and you, it all starts with how you wake up in the morning. And then, how you help your kids proactively wake up themselves.Ready to upgrade?Ive created a cheat sheet for putting yourself into a PEAK-STATE, immediately. You follow this daily, your life will change very quickly.Get the cheat sheet hereThis column first appeared on Medium.

Build Your Written Communication Skills
Build Your Written Communication SkillsBuild Your Written Communication SkillsWritten communication skills can be useful, even crucial, for career success. If youre good at geschftlicher umgang writing, youre more likely to create a good impression. But if you arent getting the homilie across clearly with your words, your chances for getting jobs, promotions, raises and bonuses may be harmed.Whether youre sending a winning cover letter to a hiring manager, a memo to a colleague, a report to your team or an email to a client, crisp, highly focused and error-free writing signals that youre someone who is organized, knowledgeable and detail oriented.Conversely, written communications that are long-winded, imprecise or strewn with typos leave readers wondering how you handle other aspects of your job. If your business writing abilities are a weakness, the time to improve is now.How can you develop written communication skills?Writing can be intimidating, but as with most things, practice helps. So does learning the basics. You can do that by taking a business-writing course at your local community college or in an online workshop. Asking a trusted coworker, friend or family member to review your words can also help.To get you started, here are five steps that can make a real difference in developing effective written communication skills1. Have the right mindset Before you begin any writing project, gather the necessary resources and have them nearby, including research materials. The more prepared you are, the more relaxed youll be as you start. First-rate writing does not happen by accident. Before placing a single finger on the keyboard, take a moment to organize your thoughts and identify the primary purpose of the written communication. Who is your audience? What do you want people to know or do when they finish reading what youve written? Keep those answers top of mind as you write.Robert Half has been helping job seekers find great career opportunities since 1948. Let us help you find the right job for you.GET HELP FINDING WORK2. Sort it outMake sure you have a game plan in place. What is the main message you want to get across? Its helpful to handwrite all the key points you want to make in advance so you dont forget any. Also create a brief outline of what youd like to cover in a logical order. This step can be particularly useful for larger documents that need to address many issues.3. Write in a straightforward mannerProfessionals with strong written communication skills know its critical to get to the point immediately with any message or you may lose your audience. Between emails, texts, the web, memos and reports, people are on information overload - and they wont wade through overly long messages. Many people also weigh down their written communications with buzzwords, cliches, jargon and pretentious prose. This approach only muddles the message. For example, Lets have a quick meeting is much better than Lets mindshare to align and synergize our deliverables. Impress readers with your cogent thinking, not your mastery of corporate-speak. Nobody will miss the overused cliches and fancy $5 words. The KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) philosophy is a good one to follow. Include summaries at the beginning of big reports, and use bullets or numbers to separate individual points (like weve done with this blog post). Also avoid using acronyms or industry jargon. Use too many confusing or annoying abbreviations and your audience may move on to another pressing task, missing your message altogether.4. Stay professionalAs you try to improve your written communication skills, take everything you write seriously, steering clear of any controversial or sensitive subjects. This can be easier said than done. Seriously, who doesnt want to joke around with coworkers in emails about a ridiculous new company policy? You never know when your email or other message could be forwarded, though. When in doubt, think about whether you re comfortable with the entire company - including your boss - reading what youve written.5. Check it again - and againMaybe you feel like your written communication skills are on track as you make a compelling case for updating your offices phone system. However, as you put together your masterpiece, youre moving along so quickly that the document is filled with typos and spelling mistakes. No worries, you tell yourself. Youll just run a spellcheck, and all will be fine, right? No. Spellcheck can and does miss a wide range of errors. So its worth spending a few extra minutes to reread messages yourself, and even have another person check them or read them aloud to yourself.Build your written communications skills and always review what you write for typos, tone and clarity. That way, you can make sure youre getting your point across clearly and wowing people for the right reasons.Subscribe to the Robert Half newsletter for free articles and resources to help you succeed in your c areer - all sent directly to your inbox. Stop procrastinating and get things done in 2 minutes or less
Stop procrastinating and get things done in 2 minutes or lessStop procrastinating and get things done in 2 minutes or lessA couple of years ago, I wrote down a goal to write and publish a book to help students build their self-confidence, stop procrastinating and maximize their examination grades.I estimated that writing this book would take approximately 3 months with a final word count between 30,000 to 50,000 words. On several occasions, I remember sitting down with my laptop ready to start writing, but never actually getting started.I welches paralyzed with anxiety and fear that my work wouldnt be good enough. So instead of writing, I wasted precious time researching new content for the book. This went on for several months until I was sick and tired of procrastinating on publishing my book. Luckily, I accidentally stumbled upon a powerful strategy that helped me destroy my procrastination and schliff my book. How to stop procrastinating using the 2-minuteruleI quickly realized that my obsession with being perfect and on the final result of a published book was causing my anxiety and procrastination. So one day, as I was staring at my laptop I asked myself a simple but powerful questionWhat can I do right now?And so, I simply wrote one sentence. No big deal right? WrongStraight away I experienced relief from my anxiety and a short boost of self-confidence.I wrote the next sentence. And the next. And so on.By the end of that full day, I had completed a 5,000-word rough draft.Within 30 days I had completed the entire draft of the book. The best part about this was that I only focused on doing something small every day and the final result was simply a by-product.By shifting our focus from the intimidating end result to simply getting started today, we can overcome the mental roadblocks that cause procrastination. The Secret Of Getting Ahead Is Getting StartedMark TwainHow to use the 2-minute ruleThis is where the 2-minute rule can be an effective strategy to stop pr ocrastinating and take action towards your goals. This technique highlighted within David Allens bestselling book, Getting Things Done (audiobook), simply suggests that if a task takes less than 2-minutes then just do it now. (1)This could be as simple as taking out the trash after cooking, replying an email to a colleague straight away or even doing your laundry as soon as you get home from work. This way you save yourself time that would have been wasted on reviewing the same task on your to-do list over and over again for weeks.Plus, you reduce anxiety and boost your self-confidence by getting mora things done.If a goal takes more than two minutes, break it down into steps that take 2 minutes or less to complete i.e putting on your running shoes, writing one sentence in your draft. You can easily use this technique for everyday tasks, but we can drive this to the next level to help you stick to good habits over the long run.For example, lets say you want to eat healthier and lose 10 kg over the next couple of months. Dave Carvajal Explains What It Takes to Lead a Startup
Dave Carvajal Explains What It Takes to Lead a StartupDave Carvajal Explains What It Takes to Lead a StartupAre You Ready to Lead a Startup? Ask Dave CarvajalDo you know what it takes to be a leader? Dave Carvajal does. The startup world is an exciting place. With constant change, novel experiences, innovation, and collaboration, working at and leading a startup requires a certain level of adaptability that according to Dave Carvajal, founder of the executive search firm Dave Partners not everyone possesses. There is a clear distinction between entrepreneurship and leadership. Not every entrepreneur can cross the chasm to become a leader, Carvajal explained. But why trust Dave Carvajals opinion? Simple Its what he does for a living. For over 20 years, Carvajal has helped companies develop their recruitment kollektivs and fill their open positions with boundless energy and charisma. After working for two years in Prudentials investment-banking analyst program at the beginning of his car eer, Carvajal found his true calling in the world of talent acquisition. He left the world of spreadsheets and derivatives behind to work for one of New York Citys top executive-search firms. Later, he joined HotJobs.com, now known as Yahoo HotJobs, as a co-founder and Vice President of Human Resources, building out the team and exceeding projected goals within the company. Carvajal then moved on to cultivate the team at TheLadders, now known as Ladders, where he continued to make a name for himself in the recruiting industry. After a shift in perspective and passion, Carvajal decided to leave the corporate world for a more entrepreneurial venture, becoming the go-to expert for filling leadership roles and curating executive teams for newly created technology startups. Helping companies, such as Tumblr and Shutterstock, build out their internal recruitment and leadership teams, Carvajal knows what it takes to be successful as an executive at a startup and has even written a book abo ut it titled, Hire Smart From the Start The Entrepreneurs Guide to Finding, Catching, and Keeping the Best Talent for Your Company. On top of helping entrepreneurs find success in the startup world, Carvajals book also taps into his philanthropic side 100 percent of the proceeds from his book will be donated to Room to Read to promote literacy in the developing world. However, before you can use Carvajals advice to help land a leadership position, you need to figure out if being a leader is right for you. There is a clear distinction between entrepreneurship and leadership. Not every entrepreneur can cross the chasm to become a leader. Are you ready to lead?Start by doing some serious soul-searching to determine if leading a startup is what you really want. Carvajal suggests asking yourself the following seven questionsDo I really want to do this?Am I prepared to roll up my sleeves? Can I handle the time commitment required, including possible all-nighters?Am I willing to do what it ta kes to make this successful? Will the sacrifices I need to make be worth it to me?Is this a team that I fit well with?Do I believe in the values, mission, and culture of the company?Once you are 100 percent certain this is your next step, you need to know what recruiters, like Carvajal, look for in startup leaders. What are the key qualities that separate successful candidates from the rest?To be an executive leader, you need humilityCarvajals job is to take fledgling, technology startups and find candidates to create an efficient executive mainboard with the goal of exponentially growing the companies revenue by millions of dollars. In order to find the right leaders to reach unterstellung formidable goals, Carvajal utilizes psychology to identify leaders who possess the right combination of competence, confidence, and skill. Studies show that people with a high level of confidence in their abilities often overestimate their actual skill level. Using this logic, one of the best quali ties to look for in an executive leader is a quality that, according to Carvajal, is largely underestimated in American business today humility. The best leaders are committed to continuous self-improvement. In order to learn and grow, you must have an openness that humility allows, revealed Carvajal. To be a leader at a startup requires people who are able to adapt, collaborate, both lead and follow, and inspire others around a vision. There needs to be a level of agility that allows leaders, and, by extension the company, to zigzag and build a meritocracy where the best ideas rise to the top.The best leaders are committed to continuous self-improvement.For Carvajal, this means learning agility, being scrappy, leading by example, and demonstrating equal comfort as player and coach, are all things that matter at startups.Admittedly, these soft skills are hard to demonstrate via a resume and during the interview process. So, how do you show headhunters and employers that you have the qualities they are seeking?Demonstrate your ability to build structuresTo be considered for a startup leadership position, you need to highlight the areas of your experience where you successfully have established structures and previously led teams or business units. According to Carvajal, there are two types of people in the workforce those who are good at building structures and those who are good at following the structures created before them. The candidates who have spent a majority of their career in large, corporate environments may not be adept at creating the structures that a startup needs to grow and flourish. If I can find someone who has experience building structure and scaling organizations in terms of the infrastructure, processes, system, and people, I would much rather choose the person with that proven experience than take a chance on someone whos never done it, has very rarely done it, or has done it without success, Carvajal explained. While Carvajal admits its n ot a complete deal-breaker to have little experience in this area, highlighting instances where you helped develop an internal structure, led teams on different types of projects, or created teams within your company will propel you forward in the application process.Proven like-to-like experience in scaling and building structure is the best example to show on a resume and demonstrate in an interview, Carvajal adds. He also noted that to stand out, a candidate should be able to adeptly talk about a problem set theyve tackled and how their experiences of both success and failure inspired new approaches and ways of thinking. But, what if you dont have solid, concrete experiences to bring up? Dont worry There are still ways to showcase your best self in hopes of landing the job, according to CarvajalLearn Research how the greatest companies make the best hires. Focus on what these companies do and want not what you do and want.Network Get to know the best people in your industry. The best jobs are often not advertised, and since headhunters target the best people in the field, its beneficial to be in those circles.Get your resume professionally written Your resume should read like a marketing brochure, highlighting your benefits to the employer. Most resumes are a poorly written collection of accomplishments that read like a technical manual not the cohesive career story you want to sell to employers.Create your own personal blueprint Write down what drives, motivates, and inspires you at work to anchor yourself when applying for new positions.Use social media Share original content around how you have succeeded in overcoming some challenge, achieving high measure of growth, or even explaining what you learned after a work failure and how you would apply that knowledge next time. While this seems like a lot of effort, Carvajal did share this tidbit of advice to help keep your leadership job search and your career in perspectiveProvide value. Keep your head do wn, stay focused, and remain driven to help achieve the companys mission.Does your resume showcase your leadership potential? We can help with a professionally written resumeTo learn more about hiring, recruiting, and making yourself the best candidate for an executive position, check out Carvajals latest book, Hire Smart From the Start The Entrepreneurs Guide to Finding, Catching, and Keeping the Best Talent for Your Company. The Walking Mentorship, Day 6 A Strategic Architecture for Your Life
The Walking Mentorship, Day 6 A Strategic Architecture for Yur Life Joo Perre Viana is the mastermind behind theWalking Mentorshipprogram, an innovative one-week experience that helps people face their personal andprofessionalchallenges while taking a120-kilometer (74.5-mile) hike alongthe Camino de Santiago. The purpose of this methodology is to help gain perspective on what is important (both personally and professionally), update our reality maps, and create an action plan for the future, Viana says.On Sunday, August 28, Viana embarked on his latest hike.Over the course of the week, he journaled about thejourney he and his participants were on. Were publishing those journal entries. Read the rest of the seriespart 0,part 1,part 2,part 3, part 4, and part 5.- Ed. Note. One one hand, it ishard to believe that we are already on the sixth day of our journey. On the other, when I close my eyes and think about the intensity of every experience, laugh, pain , and blister we haveshared, I can feel a bond only accessible topeople who have spent a great deal of time together people whodare to open their hearts to friendship.Miracles seem to happen everyday if yourepaying attention to them. Atleast, thats the way I think every morning when I wake up.Today, we saw an even bigger miracle than usual whenour injured companion overcome theirelephant foot and, defying the laws of human limits, walked side by side with the rest of us, looking healthier and healthier as the kilometers passed underneath our boots.I am tempted to say that the special hospitality and thedeep love and respect provided by Andrea and Cristina, the Italian couple that runs Casa Leiras, were directly responsible for our companionsrecovery. In the past, I have witnessed similar happenings in the same place. When medicine is short, love seems to do the rest and yes, we did also drink an amazing limoncello that might have helped.Throughout most of our morning journey, the route ran through a spectacular forest. We continued through two little villages, Castro and A Carballeira, until we saw the magnificent Pico Sacro, the massive needle-shaped mountain we first saw two days ago. We then began our descent to the Ulla river.Entering the municipality of Vedra, we crossed at A Ponte Ulla. Once wecrossed the Ulla, we took anice break at the restaurant of seniorra Ilda, who is a good friend of The Walking Mentorship. After that, we started our incredible 300-meter ascent to Outeiro, which gave us a beautiful view of the river and a brutal temperature of 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit). After six days on the road, however, our bodieshadadapted to very different rhythms and routines. For some of us, moments like this ascent urge us to push ourselves, to try longer distances in the future and keep developing our walking philosophies. In the afternoon, we took a longer break than usual so that we could reflect on our growth and start to think aboutour individ ual strategies going forward. We built the first drafts of our strategic architectures, which give usmore defined pictures of the better selves we wished to be in the future. In the evening, we visited one of the characters of this route and aelendher good friend of the program, Don Manolo. He isthe owner of the Pazo de Galegos hotel, atrue gem that isonly accessible to those whoknow where to find it. If our legs and souls were already in heaven thanks to the hike, now it was our stomachs turn. It is hard to select the best part of our meal was it theham, the empanada, the pimientos de Padron, the lemon and salty shrimp, or the bull stake? Maybe it was the house wine or the strawberries with creamvery hard to say.Our journey is approaching Santiago. There are only 16 kilometers to go. At the same time, we are approaching better understandingsof what we want to change and improve inour lives. As the mentor of this one-of-a-kind group, Ive started feeling that my task is almost accompli shed. I know that this will not be an easy night for me to sleep. The certainty that I will never live this wonderful week with these marvelous people again makes me a bit sad.But the certainty that we lived all of this together has helped me drymy internal tears.Tomorrow, we will walk a little more.Ultreia et Suseia,JoaoPhotos of Day 6Joo Perre Viana foundedtheWalking Mentorshipprogram.
